I had no choice but to take on replacing the cracked screen of my trusty iPhone 11 myself after getting a few quotes for the repair – it was way cheaper to DIY it. While I was nervous, I found that with the right preparation, a DIY iPhone 11 screen replacement can actually go pretty smoothly.
The first step is collecting all you need. Some of the essentials included a set of precision screwdrivers – you’ll need both Pentalobe and Phillips heads for this job. A spudger tool for opening things up carefully was also a must-have. Tweezers for handling tiny parts and adhesive strips to hold it all together rounded out the toolkit. Of course, you also need a replacement screen.
The next thing I did was disconnect that battery. Safety has to be the number one priority in any repair job. I wasn’t about to risk frying something by leaving the battery in.
After that, it’s time to start freeing the actual screen. I went at it carefully with the Pentalobe screwdriver, removing each tiny screw and setting them somewhere I wouldn’t lose them. Once unscrewed, use a spudger to make quick work of popping the busted display off. Gently work around the edges, and it will eventually separate.
Next up is transferring over the important components. Your old screen’s sensor assembly and speaker need to be transferred to the new one. Take it slow, and you’ll be able to safely detach each one to swap them over without any issues. Leaving out even one of these could have caused problems.
Applying the adhesive strips to secure the new screen is the next important step. The kit instructions walked me through it carefully. Getting that alignment just right took some doing, but a few minute adjustments and it was perfectly even with the body.
Refitting everything back together took equal focus. I made sure all the connectors and tiny screws went precisely where they had come from. Taking your time with reversals makes the process much smoother.
Before calling it complete, power up the phone to test for flaws. Go about it by scrolling, tapping, and checking the display for flaws.
In the end, replacing that screen myself taught me a lot. With patience and the proper tools and guidance, DIY repairs are achievable. While tricky, the feeling of bringing my iPhone back to life made the effort worthwhile. I’d do it again in a pinch, for sure.
